 What used to be a bubbly environment has in the past couple of months gradually turned a ghost town.

For those doing business within the vicinity of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN) in Ikotun, Lagos, the death of its founder, Prophet TB Joshua, has brought untold hardship on them.

This is because many of their businesses died along with the founder.

A visit by CelebrityPlusOnline revealed that many outlets including hotels, eateries, convenient stores and business centers have all closed shop.

This is due to the fact that many of their customers mostly foreigners who thronged the church while TB Joshua was alive no longer come around.

If some of them thought that the development was for a little while and that things would soon normalise after a few months of TB Joshua”s death, they soon perished the thought when the matter got from bad to worse because of the delay in reopening the church following the controversies over succession.

The controversy has pitched late TB Joshua’s wife, Helen, against some of the junior pastors of SCOAN.

As it is, many of the hotel owners who hitherto smiled to the bank when the church was in full gear have put up their property for sale.

Investigations reveal that many of the Hotel owners took loans from banks and the banks are on their necks over their inability to service the loans following the lull in business.

Those not under heavy pressure to repay loans have put up their property for lease instead of outright sale.

Despite the reopening of the church to normal worship a few months ago ,the situation has failed to improve and the plight of the business owners remaining what it is.

This is because traffick has waned drastically at the once boisterous church.

Instagram users in Russia have been notified that the service will shut down beginning at midnight on Sunday after its owner Meta Platforms said last week it would allow social media users in Ukraine to post messages such as 'Death to the Russian invaders.'

An email message from the state communications regulator told people to move their photos and videos from Instagram before it was shut down, and encouraged them to switch to Russia's own 'competitive internet platforms.'

The move comes after Meta, which also owns Facebook, said on Friday that it temporarily changed its hate speech policy in Ukraine, in the wake of Russia's February 24 invasion.

The company said it would be wrong to prevent Ukrainians from 'expressing their resistance and fury at the invading military forces.'

But Russian officials have said the new rules allow 'calls for violence' against Russian soldiers, and on Friday, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office called for a criminal investigation to be launched against Meta, citing Russian propaganda and extremism laws.

The shut down of Instagram comes one week after the country announced it was shutting down Facebook, over a leak from a content moderator, which showed that the social media site was bending its own rules to allow for some calls to violence against Russian invaders in Ukraine. The company later confirmed the leak.

'I want to be crystal clear: Our policies are focused on protecting people's right to free speech as an expression of self-defense in reaction to a military invasion of their country,' Nick Clegg, Meta's president of public affairs, said in a statement to the Washington Post.

'The fact is, if we applied our standard content policies without any adjustments, we would now be removing content from ordinary Ukrainians expressing their resistance and fury at the invading military forces, which would be rightly viewed as unacceptable.'

In internal emails to moderators that Reuters has obtained, Meta officials also specified that death threats directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko would also be permitted - unless they also targeted Russian civilians or contained additional 'indicators of credibility.'

That decision was greeted with outrage in Russia, where authorities have opened a criminal investigation against Meta, and are seeking to classify the company as an 'extremist organization,' alleging the platform was used to incite 'mass riots accompanied by violence.'

They also announced in the wake of the announcement that the country's Prosecutor General's Office asked state media watchdog Roskomnadzor to restrict access to Instagram over the 'distribution of information of information materials containing calls to carry out violent actions against Russians, including servicemen.'

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, tweeted Friday that Instagram has 80 million users in Russia, who he said will be cut 'off from one another and from the rest of the world as [about] 80 percent of people in Russia follow an account outside their country.

'This is wrong,' he tweeted.

The message to Instagram users from the regulator Roskomnadzor described the decision to allow calls for violence against Russians as a breach of international law.

'We need to ensure the psychological health of citizens, especially children and adolescents, to protect them from harassment and insults online,' it said, explaining the decision to close down the platform.

But the move is just the latest social media company to abandon the country since its invasion of Ukraine in February.

The Google Cloud, Google Pay and YouTube monetization are now effectively dead in Russia as of Thursday.

Apple has also shut down many services, including its Apple Pay technology, and stop selling hardware in Russia. This caused for long lines at train stations in Moscow.

Microsoft, IMB and most of the major American credit card companies have stopped doing business in the country as well.

Putin is now fighting back, with Russian agents allegedly showing up at the home of a Google executive in Moscow to clamp down on an app being used by his biggest opponent.

Google officials say the supposed FSB agents gave an order to the female Google executive to either take the app down in 24 hours or be jailed in a never-before disclosed intimidation campaign last year, according to the Washington Post reported.

After the tech giant moved the executive to a hotel room under a pseudonym, the same agents came and visited her again to tell them they still wanted the app down.

Within hours, the Smart Voting app - an app created by Putin opponent Alexi Navalny which allowed Russians to register protest votes against Putin - was taken down from both the Apple and Google app stores.

The Post was told that an Apple employee in Moscow had received similar threats from the FSB, the successor to the KGB.

The names and nationalities of the two employees for the US-based companies have not been revealed.

NDLEA Traces N4.2bn to Abba Kyari, Co-Accused’s Accounts

 Fresh facts have emerged on how suspended super cop and former Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari; as well as his deputy, ACP Sunday Ubua, allegedly received a combined N4.2bn from their separate bank accounts.

The details are part of a report sent to the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, by the NDLEA.

According to the drug enforcement agency, not less than N1.4bn passed through Kyari’s account while he was commander of the IRT.

However, Kyari’s deputy, Ubua, may have received far more than him as not less than N2.8bn was traced to his eight bank accounts.

According to investigations, Ubua allegedly received a lump sum of N2.664bn on August 15, 2019. The NDLEA is now working on the assumption that the sums traced to Kyari and his deputy may be connected to the sale of some illicit substances including Tramadol worth N3bn.

A source said, “You will recall that the NDLEA is investigating an allegation that Kyari and his team seized a large consignment of tramadol in a warehouse at Amuwo Odofin in Lagos. The consignment was worth about N3bn.

“The IRT under Kyari’s command seized these drugs and they are believed to have sold the consignment to a cartel afterwards. It was around the time of this seizure that Kyari’s deputy received a deposit of N2.664bn in his personal bank account. Out of this money, he purchased FBN Insurance shares worth about N100m.”

Adeboye visits Oyedepo's $200m Ark Legacy Project

 General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye has visited Canaanland in Ota, Ogun state to see the Ark Legacy Project of David Oyedepo’s Living Faith Church.

The visit occurred on 11 March.

Pastor Steve Ogah of the Winners Chapel thanked for the visit and his love and goodwill.

“We were glad you visited us at the ongoing project site for The Legacy Ark Project (TALP)”, Ogah wrote on Facebook.

Its building commenced in March last year.

People Commend Funso Adeotifor confronting Mercy Aigbe

 Funso Adeoti, first wife to Kazim Adeoti, the new husband of Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe has come out to accuse the actress of snatching her husband, though they were friends.

EU closes airspace for Russian airlines as Europe unites to cripple Putin with sanctions

 

Russian airlines will no longer be able to use EU airspace, according to a German radio broadcaster.

Matthias Deis, deputy studio manager for German TV broadcaster ARD Capital Studio, announced the decision on Twitter.

Mr Deis said: “EU countries close airspace for Russian airlines. Just confirmed to me from a reliable source.”

He added: “Reversal of flights over Russian territory in anticipation of Russian response I hear. This means that Russia could also close its airspace.”

This comes after Germany broke with a historic policy earlier today when they announced they would be sending military weapons to help Ukraine.

Several other European countries have made similar announcements, while Russian-owned planes can no longer enter UK airspace.

Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia and Romania said earlier today that they were banning some flights from Russia.

Russia itself earlier said it would close its airspace to flights from Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic after they issued a ban on Russian jets. They retaliated in kind to the UK.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas had urged other European Union countries to issue similar restrictions on Twitter, adding: “There is no place for planes of the aggressor state in democratic skies.”

Latvian Transport Minister Talis Linkaits also said on Twitter that “Latvia will close its airspace to Russian-registered airlines for commercial flights.” He added that the decision would be formally approved at the next cabinet meeting.

Flightradar 24 showed that an Aeroflot carrier, among the airplanes that had been banned from UK airspace, was forced to take a significant detour over Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea this morning between Moscow and Budapest. The journey took a full 70 minutes longer than usual.

However, Russia’s closing of airspaces in response has also created problems for the West.

UK airlines would typically use Russian airspace when flying the “great circle route” over nothern Russia and into parts of Asia such as China and Japan.

Virgin Atlantic has suspended one of their cargo routes between London and Shanghai.

Meanwhile, British Airways confirmed that it would reroute to avoid Russian airspace. This will result in longer flight times and higher fuel costs.

A Nigerian man has shared a heartbreaking encounter involving his girlfriend that made him conclude to never fall in love again.

He said that he paid his woman of four years a surprise visit on Feb 14, but on getting to her place, he caught her in bed with another guy.

“So, yesterday, the media officer of the Super Eagles who works in a radio station called me to inform me that somebody wanted to speak with me and I said he should give him my number.

“Musa called me and said he had heard my story and that he and his teammates will do something but, for the time being, I should give him my account number. I did and in about an hour’s time, I got an alert of N2 million. I appreciate that a lot,” he said.

Obiekwu, who said he was forced to retire at 30 in 2004 due to health reasons, said a number of ex-internationals were passing through hard times, urging them not to be ashamed to speak out instead of dying in silence.

He advised active sportsmen and women to save and invest their earnings to avoid running into hitches when they retired.

According to him, If you don’t come out to tell Nigerians your story, they won’t know how to help you.

“So, I encourage my colleagues to do what they can to keep body and soul together. There is nothing to be shameful for.

“As an ex-player, I want to advise the younger ones to save and invest because football and sports are something that you do within a period in life. If you retire, you begin to struggle if you don’t save enough.

“In my case, I did not waste my money, at least I have a house. Imagine the landlord throwing your property out because you can’t pay rent. It would have been worse.

“Our club managers and administrators should also complement the effort of state governments by making sure they pay players and coaches.

Delta Woman Demands Justice_--My Baby Boy Was Only Eight Days In School When The Authorities Flogged Him To Death

 

According to a report by SaharaReporters, Gift Ohanazeze, mother of the 19-month-old pupil of Arise and Shine Nursery and Primary School, Asaba, Delta State, who was reportedly flogged to death has called for justice for her son.

Speaking with SaharaReporters on Wednesday, the young woman explained that she had barely enrolled her son in the school before the sad incident occurred.

Ohanazeze said she was a single mother who had been struggling to take care of the child and had just moved to Asaba and in a bid to get a job, she enrolled her son in the school.

She lamented that she made a mistake of not making enquiries before taking the child to the school considering the bad history of the school in the community where a teacher had allegedly removed the fingernails of a baby while beating the child.

Meanwhile, an autopsy will be carried out on the corpse of the little boy today (Wednesday) to ascertain the cause of his death, the mother said.

Recall that the state police commissioner, Ari Muhammed Ali had said a post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death of the deceased child.

Speaking with SaharaReporters, the mother said,“My son was one year and seven months. The day I went to meet the school boss that they flogged my child; she told me that my baby was disturbing the school, she said do I know the gravity of my son’s offence? I asked her what the gravity of offence a child of 1 year, 7 months would commit? She said the boy was disturbing the school; that was all she said.

“Her son, at the police station, said Obinna was playing with water, she questioned him that where the tap is, Obinna’s hand could not get there, that’s what the proprietress told the GRA police station.

“The son again claimed that he pushed another child and hit his head when they were interviewing him yesterday but some other children at the school said Obinna was only crying, took his lunch box to the proprietress, she took the box from him, dropped it and called the son and a teacher, they tied Obinna and she was the one flogging, not her son. The son is just an accomplice who held the leg of my child, while the other one held the hand.

“My son is barely two weeks in that school, he was a new intake; that was his eighth day, even the uniform they gave him, he had not worn some of them, he only wore one. This is his first time of going to school. I had to register him because I didn’t have a job, I barely feed so I couldn’t register him but now, I had to gather money to register him so I can also look for a job.

“The proprietress and the son are in the police station but the other lady who held the leg ran away, they’ve not seen her since then.

“It was after my son’s incident I learnt that they really beat children in that school, there are kids with bruises on their legs, they injure some; they once removed a baby’s fingernail while beating. People were saying this is not the first time. The problem is I just relocated to Asaba so I didn’t know. I even live in an uncompleted building and I had not stayed up to one month in that compound. The mistake I made is, I didn’t ask questions, I didn’t know.

“The police said the autopsy will be conducted today, as I speak to you, I’m at the mortuary, we are waiting for the police officers to come so we can take the corpse. From what I’m seeing the governor is really interested in this case, he’s doing his best, he’s fighting like this boy is his son, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa is trying his best to ensure I get justice. Even the commissioner, she is also trying, she was the one that said they must conduct autopsy today.

“It was one Mr Saviour that helped me to amplify my voice, he was the one who started this fight even when the child was flogged. The children in school said they couldn’t even count if it was 31 strokes or more.”

SaharaReporters had broken the story of how the late toddler was beaten by the school administrators.

The sad incident was made known by Ebenezer Omejalile, Chief Operating Officer of Advocates for Children and Vulnerable People’s Network, a human rights group.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the baby, a pupil of Arise and Shine Nursery and Primary School, Asaba, Delta State, was given 31 strokes of the cane for playing with water and getting wet.

The mother of the victim had said that the act was perpetrated by the school owner and her son, who tied the hands and legs of the baby before flogging him into a coma.

The woman and her son, who were initially in police custody but released after reaching an agreement with the victim’s family, were rearrested on Saturday after the baby died.

Strike: FG, inter-religious council meet ASUU next week

There are indications that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, will next week convene a meeting aimed at resolving issues surrounding the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Those expected to be part of the meeting are the leadership of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council co-headed by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar; and the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev Samson Ayokunle; the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari; and some other officials.

The PUNCH learnt that the leadership of ASUU will be reached out to after the meeting.

Ngige disclosed this to one of our correspondents in a telephone interview on Thursday.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), during a meeting with NIREC, mandated Ngige, Adamu and Gambari to look into the demands of ASUU.

The National President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview with The PUNCH had said his union did not trust the government to implement its demands despite the promise by the President.

Ngige said, “Like I said, we were surprised ASUU went on strike despite telling NIREC that they wanted to go and consult with their NEC. We were expecting feedback from their NEC when the news about the declaration of strike came through.

“However, as soon as I return to the country on Sunday, I would convene a meeting with NIREC, Minister of Education, the Chief of Staff to the President and we would reach out to them.”

Osodeke could not be reached for comments on why his union failed to report back to the NIREC committee.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education ha started the process of inaugurating a white paper drafting panel on tertiary institutions.

The Director of Media and Public Relations, Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, stated that the ministry had constituted the panel which would be inaugurated soon.

In a statement titled “Federal Government constitutes white paper drafting panels for tertiary institutions,” Goong explained that 10 white paper drafting panels have been constituted.

The statement read, “Following the receipt of reports of visitation panels to tertiary institutions last year, Education Minister, Adamu Adamu, has constituted White Paper Drafting Panels for Tertiary Institutions across the country.

“10 White Paper Drafting Panels have been constituted for 36 universities, while six panels have been constituted for 25 polytechnics with 21 Colleges of Education having five panels.

“One panel is to draft a White Paper for four inter-university centres. The panels will be inaugurated in the coming days.

“All the panels have two weeks from the date of inauguration to submit their reports.”

The management of the University of Jos has ordered students of the institution to vacate the campus till further notice, following the ASUU strike.

The university gave the order on Thursday in a statement signed by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information and Publications, Abdullahi Abdullahi.

According to him, the university took the decision after the Senate approved the suspension of academic activities as a result of the strike.

The statement read, “Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof Tanko Ishaya has, on behalf of Senate of the university, approved the suspension of academic activities in the institution for the 2020/2021 Academic Session until further notice.

“This follows an emergency meeting of the university management where the issue of the one month warning strike declared by the ASUU was considered as it affects academic activities in the institution.”

Also, the Chairman of ASUU at the Federal University, Dutsin-ma Dr. Jibrin Shagari, is leading a team to monitor compliance with the union’s one month national strike at the institution.

Other executive members of the union at the university are members of the monitoring team.

 President Muhammadu Buhari announced the appointment of new Vice Chancellors and key executives for Nigeria’s newly founded universities.

The VCs and chief officers will oversee the establishment of four universities in 2021.

The latest appointments were announced Tuesday by Ben Goong, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education.

The appointments are:

Police Arrested DCP Abba Kyari And Handed Him To Us Over Cocaine Deal- NDLEA Confirms

 Suspended DCP Abba Kyari has been handed over the the NDLEA after his arrest by the police.

This is coming few hours after he was declared wanted by the drug law enforcement agency for involvement in cocaine deal.

A statement by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy said, “Five of the wanted suspects namely: DCP Abba Kyari; ACP Sunday J. Ubua; ASP Bawa James; Inspector Simon Agirgba and Inspector John Nuhu were driven into the National Headquarters of NDLEA in Abuja at about 5 pm on Monday 14th February to formally hand them over for interrogation and further investigation.

“The Agency wishes to assure that no stone will be left unturned to ensure that all suspects already in custody and those that may still be indicted in the course of the investigation will face the full weight of the law at the end of the ongoing probe.”

Nigeria’s First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari has explained why she decided to travel back to Abuja on Thursday by train rather than following the routine flight back.

Recalls that the pictures of the First Lady sitting in one of the cabins of the Kaduna to Abuja rail line, were all over the media on Friday morning, including some major national dailies, leaving many of those conversant presidential travels wondering.

Providing an explanation into the circumstances responsible for the First Lady’s joining the train, Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the First Lady, Aliyu Abdullahi, said she did it to encourage patronage for the railway service system in the country.

Abdullahi, who explained that the First Lady intended to interact with ordinary Nigerians while on the journey, said she also planned to show Nigerians that travelling by rail is safe and effective, adding it also showed that she is proud of the achievement’s of her husband’s administration.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said he needs $36bn to connect the entire nation by rail.

Amaechi said this on NTA’s ‘Good Morning Nigeria’programme, which was monitored by The PUNCH on Friday.

According to him, railway is capital intensive and this has made it difficult for private firms to invest in the sector.

The River state former governor said the reason the Nigerian government had been borrowing funds from overseas was because only the government was able to come up with the needed collateral to take such loans.

When asked why the Kaduna-Abuja railway had not been linked to Lokoja, Amaechi responded, “If we had money, I would want to be the minister that initiated and completed the linking of Nigeria. All I need is $36bn. With $36bn, all of them (will be linked).

“The project from Itakpe to Abuja is $3.09bn. If we have that, we will start it tomorrow morning.”

Amaechi said President Muhammadu Buhari had done exceedingly well in the area of infrastructure but said he feared that the gains of the Buhari regime would be reversed if the Peoples Democratic Party takes over in 2023.

Two policemen, two others shot dead in Ibadan bullion van attack

 Armed robbers yesterday afternoon attacked a bullion van in the Idi Ape area of Ibadan, Oyo State, shooting two policemen and two others dead and making away with an unspecified amount of money.

The seven masked thieves attacked the cash vehicle which was said to be coming from the Iwo Road area of the city, it was said.

They shot the van open and took away money from it, an eyewitness said.

Bullet marks were seen on the bullion van.

The attack, which lasted about 20 minutes, caused panic in the area.

Residnts fled and motorists abandoned the vehicles and took cover, it was said.

Policemen and officials of the state security network codenamed Amotekun Corps later arrived at the scene.

Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, said she could not confirm the number of policemen who died in the attack.

“You can see the Amotekun, the policemen, everyone is here working hand in hand so that we can get the people involved and get to the root of what has happened. It was a coordinated attack but I will give more information on this when we finally get the details,” she said.

Onadeko also said one of the robbers was shot dead and his body taken away by his men.
